Mt. Oeyama

Mt. Oeyama (大江山) is a range straddling Fukuchiyama, Yosano, and Miyazu in Kyoto Prefecture; its highest peak, Senjogatake (832 m), is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. It is famous for the ogre legend of Shuten-doji, and is also known as a sea-of-clouds viewpoint and as part of the Tango-Amanohashidate-Oeyama Quasi-National Park. Around the Onitake Inari Shrine, a primeval forest of beech and Mongolian oak remains, chosen as one of the 100 Forest-Bathing Forests.
From Oe Station, a municipal bus (weekdays) runs to Oeyama-no-Ie, from where it is about a 1-hour walk to the summit. On weekends and holidays the bus does not run, so a taxi or private car is realistic.

Mt. Oeyama (Senjogatake) is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai (and one of the New 100 Famous Flower Mountains). From Oe Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyafuku Line, take the Fukuchiyama municipal bus “Oeyama-no-Ie line” to its terminus, Oeyama-no-Ie (about 18 minutes), then it is about a 1-hour walk to the summit of Senjogatake. The municipal bus runs on weekdays only and does not operate on weekends, holidays, or year-end/new-year, so on those days a taxi from Oe Station or a private car is realistic.

From Oe Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyafuku Line, take the Fukuchiyama municipal bus “Oeyama-no-Ie line” and alight at the terminus, Oeyama-no-Ie (about 18 minutes). From here the trail leads via Mt. Hatogamine to the summit of Senjogatake in about 1 hour. The summit has a second-order survey marker and views of the Tango mountains and toward the Sea of Japan. The municipal bus runs on weekdays only (no service on weekends, holidays, or year-end/new-year), so always check the operating days and departures.

2. [Return] Mt. Oeyama (Senjogatake) → Oeyama-no-Ie → Oe Station (municipal bus)

To descend, retrace the route and take the municipal bus from the Oeyama-no-Ie stop back to Oe Station. Services are infrequent, so check the departure to match your descent (the 13:11 and 17:05 departures suit a day trip). On weekends and holidays the bus does not run, so return by taxi or private car. There are no shops or vending machines on the mountain, so prepare food and water around Oe Station.

Day-trip plan: Oe Station dep. 7:24 → Oeyama-no-Ie arr. 7:42 → about 1 hour on foot to Senjogatake → wander the range and descend → Oeyama-no-Ie dep. 13:11 → Oe Station arr. 13:29 (weekdays). The Oeyama range traverse linking Mt. Hatogamine and Mt. Nabezuka is also popular.
Best season: fresh greenery (April–May) and autumn colour (November) are ideal. On early mornings in autumn and early winter, the sea of clouds from the Onitake Inari Shrine is spectacular. In winter, watch for snow and ice.
