Mt. Hōkyōsan (宝篋山, 461 m) is a mountain in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kantō. A viewpoint peak just south of Mt. Tsukuba, its summit looks out over Mt. Tsukuba and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji, the Ushiku Great Buddha and Lake Kasumigaura. With streamside paths and satoyama scenery, its low elevation and well-maintained trails make it a popular hike for beginners. The name comes from the hōkyōintō stone pagoda at the summit.
The nearest stations are Tsuchiura Station (JR Jōban Line) and Tsukuba Station (Tsukuba Express); the trailhead (around the Oda rest house) is reached by bus.

Mt. Hōkyōsan is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kantō. Access is by Kantō Railway bus (toward Tsukubasan-guchi) from JR Tsuchiura Station, getting off at “Hōkyōsan-iriguchi”, or by the Tsukuba city “Tsuku-Bus” Oda Shuttle from Tsukuba Station, getting off at “Oda-Tōbu”. The Oda rest house at the trailhead has parking and toilets.

How to access the trailheads

  1. [Outbound] Tsuchiura / Tsukuba Station → trailhead (bus)
  2. [Climb] Oda rest house → Hōkyōsan summit (Gokurakuji / Jōganji courses)
  3. [Return] Trailhead → station
  4. Recommended plans & area info

1. [Outbound] Tsuchiura / Tsukuba Station → trailhead (bus)

There are two public-transport options. ① From Tsuchiura Station (JR Jōban Line), take a Kantō Railway bus toward Tsukubasan-guchi (about 30 min) and get off at “Hōkyōsan-iriguchi”, then walk about 4 minutes to the Oda rest house. ② From Tsukuba Station (Tsukuba Express), take the Tsukuba city community bus “Tsuku-Bus” Oda Shuttle (about 40 min) and get off at “Oda-Tōbu”, then walk about 7 minutes. Both run infrequently, so always check the latest times before boarding.

Bus access at a glance
JR Tsuchiura Station (Kantō Railway bus, Tsukubasan-guchi line) → “Hōkyōsan-iriguchi”, ~4 min walk
Tsukuba Station (Tsuku-Bus Oda Shuttle) → “Oda-Tōbu”, ~7 min walk
● The Oda rest house at the trailhead has parking and toilets (car access possible).
※ The Tsuku-Bus timetable is due to be revised in April 2026; with few services, check the latest times for both directions.

2. [Climb] Oda rest house → Hōkyōsan summit (Gokurakuji / Jōganji courses)

The climb starts at the Oda rest house. The two classic routes are the streamside Gokurakuji course and the ridge Jōganji course, often combined into a loop. On well-kept paths it is about 1 hour 30 minutes up and roughly 3–4 hours for the loop, with small waterfalls and springs along the way. The broad summit has fine views — Mt. Tsukuba close at hand, plus Mt. Fuji, the Ushiku Great Buddha and Lake Kasumigaura. Low as it is, it gets hot in summer, so carry plenty of water.

3. [Return] Trailhead → station

Descend back to the Oda rest house and return as you came — by Kantō Railway bus from “Hōkyōsan-iriguchi” to Tsuchiura Station, or by the Tsuku-Bus Oda Shuttle from “Oda-Tōbu” to Tsukuba Station. As services are few, check a bus that fits your descent time in advance. From Tsuchiura or Tsukuba Station, return toward Tokyo by the Jōban Line or Tsukuba Express.

4. Recommended plans & area info

Loop plan: Tsuchiura (or Tsukuba) Station → Oda rest house → Gokurakuji course → Hōkyōsan summit → Jōganji course → Oda rest house → station (about 3–4 hours of walking). Climbable year-round, but the fresh green, autumn foliage, and the clear-air views of winter are especially fine.
Note: a low mountain that is hot in summer with some exposed sections; bring water and a hat, and allow time for the return bus.
