Mt. Takeyama (嵩山, 789 m) is a mountain in Nakanojō, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kantō. A sacred peak counted among the “Eight Views of Agatsuma”, its sheer rock faces hold a chain of curious crags — Eboshi-iwa, Otoko-iwa, Onna-iwa and the “Tainai-kuguri” rock tunnel — and the slopes are dotted with the stone statues of the 33 Saigoku Kannon. From the high point (Ōtengu) the view sweeps over the Jōshin’etsu mountains — Mt. Shirane, Mt. Azumaya, Mt. Asama. Low and quick to climb, it offers varied hiking with chains and rocky steps.
The nearest station is Nakanojō Station (JR Agatsuma Line); the trailhead at the “Michi-no-Eki Reizan Takeyama” roadside station is reached by taxi or car.

1. [Outbound] Nakanojō Station → Michi-no-Eki Reizan Takeyama (taxi / car)
The base is Nakanojō Station on the JR Agatsuma Line. The trailhead at the “Michi-no-Eki Reizan Takeyama” roadside station is about 4 km away, and as regular bus services are limited, a taxi (about 10 min) or car is realistic. The roadside station doubles as the trailhead, with parking, toilets and a shop. Nakanojō also has community buses toward the Shima and Sawatari hot springs, but services via the Takeyama trailhead are few, so check operation in advance.

2. [Climb] Roadside station → front trail → Ōtengu → east trail (loop)
The trailhead is the Michi-no-Eki Reizan Takeyama. Take the front trail up via Kotengu and Nakatengu to the high point Ōtengu (789 m). Along the way are curious crags — Eboshi-iwa, the Tainai-kuguri tunnel, Otoko-iwa, Onna-iwa — and the stone statues of the 33 Saigoku Kannon, in keeping with this mountain of faith. The classic loop descends the east trail, for about 2–3 hours in all. There are chains and steep rocky steps just below Ōtengu and around the crags; it is a beginner-to-intermediate route. Rock is slippery after rain, so take care.
There are chains and steep rock just below the Ōtengu summit and at spots like the “Tainai-kuguri”. Keep three points of contact and be especially careful on wet rock. Though a short climb, it has several fall-risk sections, so bring hiking boots and gloves.

3. [Return] Roadside station → Nakanojō Station
After descending, take a taxi from Michi-no-Eki Reizan Takeyama back to Nakanojō Station (by car, just drive back). Booking a taxi in advance for your descent time gives peace of mind. From Nakanojō Station, return toward Shibukawa and Takasaki on the JR Agatsuma Line. A stop at the Shima or Sawatari hot springs on the way down is recommended.
