Mt. Daibosatsu

Mt. Daibosatsu (大菩薩嶺) is a 2,057m peak in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
The ridge from Daibosatsu Pass to the summit is open, with sweeping panoramas of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps. It is popular among many climbers as a 100 Famous Japanese Mountain accessible as a day-hike from the Kanto area. The fresh greenery and autumn-foliage seasons are especially recommended.
From Kai-Yamato Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, access Kaminikkawa-toge by bus.

There are two trailheads: Kaminikkawa-toge and Daibosatsu-toge Trailhead.
From Kaminikkawa-toge to the summit takes 1 hour 15 minutes.
From Daibosatsu-toge Trailhead to the summit takes 4 hours 30 minutes.

Daibosatsu Hiking Routes, Difficulty & Best Season

Mt. Daibosatsu is a 2,057 m peak and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. The classic route is a loop from Kaminikkawa-toge via Fukuchan-so, the Karamatsu Ridge, the summit of Daibosatsu, and Daibosatsu Pass. It is a popular mountain that is easy even for beginners.

Main routes

• Classic loop (Kaminikkawa-toge → Fukuchan-so → Karamatsu Ridge → Mt. Daibosatsu → Daibosatsu Pass → Kaminikkawa-toge): about 6.1 km / cumulative elevation gain about 530 m / time about 3 to 4 hours / difficulty: beginner.
• Other routes: there is also a longer route climbing from the Daibosatsu-toge Trailhead on the Enzan side.

Difficulty & fitness

The physical demand is low and the technical difficulty is easy, making it suitable for beginners. Although it exceeds 2,000 m, you can reach Kaminikkawa-toge (about 1,580 m) by bus or car, so the elevation gain is small and the walk is manageable. The ridge offers fine views but can be windy, so watch for changes in the weather.

Best season

From the fresh greenery of spring to the autumn foliage (May–November) is the most comfortable time. The views from the ridge are popular year-round, but in winter there is snow and ice, so snow-mountaineering gear and experience are required.

Highlights

The greatest draw is the sweeping panorama of Mt. Fuji and Lake Daibosatsu (Kaminikkawa Dam) from the ridge running between Kaminari-iwa and Daibosatsu Pass. The Kaizan-so hut stands at Daibosatsu Pass. Water is available at Fukuchan-so and Kaizan-so.
